God Bless The Flaming Lips

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The Flaming Lips were one of my favorite bands last year. I loved the movie about them (The Fearless Freaks) and I listened to The Soft Bulletin a lot while I was in Mississippi & Louisiana working in the aftermath of the Hurricane. It always seemed to fit my mood while I was away from home.

James and I went to see the Flaming Lips last week (September 13, 2006) at the Tabernacle. I have probably seen over 100 concerts, but I have never seen anything like this. It was amazing.

There were huge balloons, confetti, streamers, a huge video screen, huge hands, dancing aliens, dancing santas, a big dancing alien, a big dancing santa, strobe lights, smog machines, and superheroes (including Wonder Woman, Thor, Captain America and maybe Space Ghost) and a lot of other things I have probably forgotten.

There was also music. Here is the set list.

Ta! Da! (Opening Music)
Race For The Prize
Free Radicals
Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots Pt. 1
Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots Pt. 2
Vein Of Stars
The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song
The W.A.N.D.
My Cosmic Autumn Rebellion
She Don't Use Jelly
Do You Realize??
-------------------
A Spoonful Weighs A Ton
War Pigs (Black Sabbath Cover)

That looks short, that is kind of deceptive. Most of the songs were extended from their recorded versions. Still, I wish they would have played a couple more. I would have loved to hear “Fight Test”, “The Gash”, and “The Spark That Bled”.

It was a wonderful show. It was very fun, upbeat and uplifting.

I did not take my camera. These photos were all linked from the Flaming Lips web forum discussing the show.
